Dylan Schubert, the reigning Southern Conference men's cross country champion and a two-time NCAA Division 1 cross country finalist at Furman, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss becoming the 10th individual conference winner in program history in 23:41.5 on the 8-kilometer layout at Johns Island County Park in South Carolina, as well as leading the Paladins to their 10th consecutive team title with a 27-55 victory against East Tennessee State, along with preparing for the Division 1 Southeast Regional on Nov. 11 at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky. Schubert shares how meaningful it was to extend the team championship dynasty, in addition to how significant it was to join Tripp Hurt, Frank Lara, Aaron Templeton, Daniel Bernal, Ryan Adams and Cameron Ponder among Furman's individual winners in the past decade. He analyzes the improvement of the group throughout the season, especially having to overcome the absence of Gabe Montague and Ponder in their lineup, and how encouraged Schubert was about Furman placing five scorers in the top 10 at the conference final. Schubert examines the benefits from racing Sept. 24 at the Cowboy Jamboree and Oct. 14 at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, and how that has helped prepare Furman for the postseason, especially in the Southeast Regional competing against Wake Forest, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Virginia, Charlotte and many other programs. He also reflects on racing in March 2021 at the NCAA final at the Greiner Family Course at Oklahoma State in Stillwater, as well as at the Division 1 championship meet November 2021 at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla., and the lessons learned to prepare for elite competition this fall. Schubert explains his leadership role with a young group and shares how proud he is regarding several teammates rising to the occasion at the conference final and entering the postseason. Schubert also speaks about the Colorado connection with the Furman program, including his career in Class 4A at Thompson Valley High and fellow state champ Sierra Bower of Basalt, along with looking forward to another strong recruiting class joining the team next year.
